Purgatorio 2.0 – Superbia | malsagūlo

This artwork is the first part of a modern day interpretation on a part of Dante Alighieri's 14th century masterpiece 'La Divina Commedia'. The poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Having survived the depths of Hell, Dante and Virgil ascend out of the undergloom to the Mountain of Purgatory ('Purgatorio) on the far side of the world. The mountain has seven terraces, corresponding to the seven deadly sins (Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, Lust).

The first one depicted here is the terrace 'Suberbia', losely translated as Pride and Narcissism.

In times of the ever present social media it seems almost essential to be present on these online platforms in order to exist and build up a personality. This self centered focus seems to become the one and only way to reflect our own value in this world.

This artwork is built up on a central sphere, capsulated into reflecting mirrors, with in front and behind these mirrors 4 well known social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & TikTok) built up in building blocs. It is finalised in front and in the back with the english translation of the part of the original texte of Dante on which this artwork is based.

As an extra… this artwork is built up with glow in the dark elements, because the sole pupose of all this social media addiction is a constant glowing attention… as fake and fabricated it may be

So, let's all try to escape this way of living… a personalised safety hammer is included for that purpose.
